A project is won on a price, then decided in the field: labour, materials, subcontracting, equipment hire, site costs. When the budget is in a spreadsheet, expenses in a notebook and invoices somewhere else, nobody can say along the way whether the project is making or losing money, or what the client still owes.

• Start from the contract: contract value, advance payment, retention, late penalties, payment terms.
• Build the budget line by line, per work package and per cost category, to know the planned margin before starting.
• Measure progress task by task, with a weight per work package: recorded progress never goes backwards.
• Separate the person who enters from the person who approves: a site expense entered by one person is approved by another.
• Tell margin and cash apart: what is earned on paper is not yet in the bank.

Projex is a web application that follows each project from signature to closing: contract terms, versioned budget, work packages and tasks, site progress, site expenses with proof, variations, invoicing, collection and profitability. A project can only be closed once the client has been invoiced and has paid in full.
